When the Roof Needs Work Under Your Panels
Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall is the job that comes up when the roof under an array needs replacing or repair. Panels typically outlast the roof they sit on. The Department of Energy cites an average panel lifespan of 25 to 35 years, and many Phoenix roofs need their underlayment redone well before that. A roofer cannot work under an array, so the panels, rails and wiring have to come off, be stored safely and go back on once the new roof is in.
Tile roofs need extra care
Concrete and clay tile is common across Phoenix. In Ahwatukee, for example, stucco homes with red tile roofs are typical of the neighborhood. On a tile roof the panels mount to hooks or standoffs that pass between or through the tiles to the deck below. The tile itself is usually not what fails. The underlayment beneath it is, and replacing it means lifting every tile, including the ones under the array. Removing an array from tile takes patience: tiles crack when walked on wrong or pried up carelessly, so we lift and stack them with care around each mount. We also ask the roofer which tile and flashing they plan to use at the mounts so the new roof and the solar hardware fit together.
Flat and foam roofs
Many older Phoenix homes and additions have flat roofs with parapets and foam or coated surfaces. Arrays on these roofs sit on tilted racks or ballasted mounts. Recoating or replacing a flat roof means moving the racks, and each penetration has to be resealed to match the new surface.
How the timing works
- Before the roofer arrives: we photograph the layout, record each panel's position and test production so there is a baseline.
- Removal day: we shut the system down safely, disconnect and label the wiring, take off panels and rails, and store them on site or off site as agreed.
- Roof work: the roofer replaces the underlayment, decking or coating. If mounts are being replaced, we coordinate where they go.
- Reinstall day: mounts are flashed and sealed into the new roof, rails and panels go back on, and wiring is reconnected.
- Restart: the system is commissioned and production is compared with the baseline.
The chance to fix other problems
With the panels off, everything underneath is exposed. It is the cheapest time to replace brittle wire, swap corroded connectors, clean out pigeon nests and debris, and add bird-proofing mesh when the array goes back. If the system is near the age where a string inverter typically fails, HomeGuide gives 10 to 15 years, it is worth talking about that too while the crew and paperwork are already lined up.
Permits and the utility
Whether reinstalling the same equipment in the same place needs its own permit depends on the jurisdiction and the scope. The City of Phoenix handles residential photovoltaic submittals through its Planning and Development Department, and the re-roof may need its own permit. If the layout changes, panels are added or the inverter is swapped while the array is down, APS or SRP may need an updated application. We confirm both before removal so the system is not stuck waiting for paperwork after the roof is done.
Warranty considerations
Roofers often warrant their work and panel makers warrant their products, and both can have conditions about who handles the mounts. EnergySage notes that work by someone the manufacturer has not authorized can void a warranty. We review the paperwork you have and flag any terms that matter before we start.
Removing panels for good
Some owners want the system off permanently, for a sale, a remodel or because it no longer works. Angi lists permanent removal and decommissioning as a separate, higher-cost job. We price it separately, including what to do with the old equipment.
What Removal and Reinstall Covers
The estimate lists each step, so you can see what the roof job adds to the solar side.
Pre-removal inspection and baseline
Layout photos, labeled wiring and a production test so the system can be checked against its own numbers later.
Panel and rail removal
Safe shutdown, disconnection and removal of panels, rails, clamps and microinverters or optimizers.
Storage
Panels stored on site under cover or taken off site, depending on space and the length of the roof job.
Mount replacement and flashing
New or reused mounts sealed and flashed into the new tile, shingle or flat roof surface.
Reinstall and recommission
Panels back in their recorded positions, wiring reconnected and the system restarted and tested.
Permanent removal
Taking a system off for good and capping or removing roof penetrations.

Typical Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Temporary removal for roof work, per system (Angi) | $1,000 to $2,000 |
| Removal, per panel (HomeGuide) | $200 to $500 |
| Removal project, 10 panels (Angi) | $1,500 to $2,500 |
| Removal project, 20 panels (Angi) | $2,500 to $4,000 |
| Removal project, 30 panels (Angi) | $3,500 to $5,000 |
| Electrical repairs found during removal (Angi) | $150 to $500 |
National ranges from Angi and HomeGuide. Reinstall pricing varies more than removal: tile versus shingle or flat roof, number of panels, new mounts, storage and permits all change it. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Detach and Reset Works
1. Walk the roof with your roofer's plan
We look at the array, the roof type and the roofer's schedule, and confirm permit and utility needs.
2. Record and remove
Layout, wiring and production are documented, then the array comes off and is stored.
3. Mounts for the new roof
Once the roofer is ready, mounts are set and flashed into the new surface.
4. Reinstall and test
Panels go back, wiring is reconnected and production is compared with the baseline.

Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall Questions
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels for a new roof?
Angi puts temporary removal for roof work at about $1,000 to $2,000 per system, with removal projects of 20 panels running $2,500 to $4,000. Reinstallation, new mounts and tile work add to that. We quote both halves in writing.
How long does removal and reinstall take?
Removal for a typical home is usually a day. Reinstalling takes about as long once the roof is ready. The gap in between depends on the roofer and any permit or utility step, so we plan the dates together.
Can the roofer just take the panels off?
Removal involves shutting down and disconnecting a live electrical system, and reinstalling involves reconnecting it to the grid. Panel and inverter warranties may also have conditions about who does the work. A solar crew handles the electrical side; the roofer handles the roof.
Will my tile get broken?
Tile can crack under foot traffic or when lifted around mounts. We work slowly around each mount and stack tiles carefully. Ask your roofer for a few spare tiles of the same profile, since older tile can be hard to match.
Should I add bird proofing when the panels go back?
If you have seen pigeons under the array, yes. The panels are already off and the space underneath is clean, so mesh goes on at the lowest added cost.
