String inverters, microinverters and optimizers
Inverter Repair in Phoenix, AZ
The inverter is the hardest-working part of a Phoenix solar system, and usually the first to fail.
- Free written estimate after we look at the roof, the inverter and your monitoring data
- Itemized pricing that separates parts, labor and any warranty claim work
- We check city permit and APS or SRP paperwork needs before equipment is changed
When the Inverter Stops, the Whole System Stops
Inverter Repair is often the first fix an aging Phoenix solar system needs, and for good reason. Panels make direct current, and the inverter turns it into the alternating current your home and the grid use. If a string inverter faults, every panel connected to it goes dark. If a microinverter fails, one panel quits while the rest keep going, which is easy to miss for months.
Signs your inverter needs attention
- A red or amber light, or an error code on the display
- The monitoring app shows zero production, or stopped updating days ago
- Production falls off every afternoon in summer and recovers in the evening
- One panel shows zero in a microinverter system
- Clicking, buzzing or a burnt smell near the unit
- The inverter restarts over and over through the day
Heat is the main enemy
Inverters are electronics, and electronics age faster when they run hot. SolarEdge's temperature derating note explains that many of its residential single-phase inverters deliver full power up to an ambient 50°C, about 122°F, and above that they lower their own output to protect themselves. The note names direct sunlight and too little clearance around the unit as causes. On a Phoenix garage wall facing west, the box can sit in full sun from midday until sunset, which is exactly when summer production should peak. Enphase rates its IQ8 microinverters for ambient temperatures up to 60°C (140°F), but a microinverter under a dark panel on a hot roof sees heat every day for years.
Heat throttling alone does not mean the inverter is broken. Production that dips on the hottest afternoons and bounces back is the inverter doing its job. Production that falls further every summer, or an inverter that shuts off entirely, is a repair.
How long inverters last
HomeGuide's inverter guide puts string inverter life at about 10 to 15 years and microinverters at 15 to 25 years. Warranties follow a similar pattern, roughly 5 to 10 years for string units and up to 25 years for some microinverters. Any system with an original string inverter more than about ten years old is in the window where those units commonly wear out.
Repair, replace or claim
Not every fault means a new inverter. A tripped breaker, a loose AC or DC connection, a blown fuse, a ground fault on one string or a lost Wi-Fi link can each stop production while the inverter itself is fine. We sort that out first. When the unit itself has failed, three paths are open:
- Warranty claim. If the inverter is still covered, the maker usually ships a replacement. EnergySage notes that warranties cover parts but only some cover labor. Tesla's standard warranty covers labor for its inverters, and Enphase's does not. We tell you which applies.
- Like-for-like replacement. The same or a current equivalent model from the same maker, which keeps the system layout the utility approved.
- Different model. Sometimes the original model is gone or a different design fits better. That can change what APS or SRP has on file, so we confirm the utility and city steps first.
Placement matters
When an inverter is replaced, it is a good time to ask whether the old spot was part of the problem. A north wall, a covered patio or a simple shade hood keeps the unit cooler, and keeping the clearances in the installation manual lets heat escape. Moving the inverter adds wiring cost, so we price it as a separate line and let you decide.
Monitoring that went quiet
A system that looks dead in the app is sometimes producing fine and only failing to report. A new router, a changed Wi-Fi password or a failed communication gateway can cut the link while the system keeps producing. We check the meter and the inverter display before assuming the worst, and reconnect monitoring as part of any inverter visit.
Inverter Work We Handle
Every inverter visit starts with testing, so the estimate covers the part that actually failed.
String inverter diagnosis and repair
Error code lookup, DC and AC testing, fuses, breakers, fans and connection repairs on wall-mounted inverters.
String inverter replacement
Swapping a failed unit for a matching or compatible model, with the utility and city steps confirmed first.
Microinverter replacement
Finding the failed unit from monitoring data, lifting the panel and replacing the microinverter under it.
Power optimizer replacement
Testing and replacing failed optimizers on systems that use them with a central inverter.
Warranty claim support
Gathering serial numbers, fault logs and photos the manufacturer asks for, and installing the replacement part.
Monitoring reconnection
Restoring Wi-Fi, cellular or gateway links so you can see production again.

Typical Inverter Repair Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Inverter repair (Fixr) | $500 to $3,000 |
| Inverter, installed, medium system (HomeGuide) | $1,500 to $3,000 |
| Inverter not communicating (Fixr) | $500 to $3,000 |
| Power optimizer, per panel (HomeGuide) | $50 to $150+ |
| Microinverter system vs. string system (HomeGuide) | 15% to 25% more |
| Solar technician labor, per hour (Fixr) | $80 to $120 |
National ranges from Fixr and HomeGuide cost guides. Price depends on the inverter type and size, warranty coverage, roof access and whether the unit is replaced or repaired. Your written estimate is the price.
How an Inverter Repair Works
1. Review the data
We look at error codes and monitoring history to see when and how production dropped.
2. Test on site
DC strings, AC output, breakers, fuses and communication links are tested to pinpoint the failure.
3. Check warranty and paperwork
We confirm warranty status and whether a replacement changes anything APS, SRP or the city needs to know.
4. Repair or replace
The fault is fixed, or the unit is replaced, with clearances and shade considered.
5. Restart and verify
The system is commissioned, monitoring is reconnected, and you see it producing.

Inverter Repair Questions
How long does a solar inverter last in Arizona?
HomeGuide gives 10 to 15 years for string inverters and 15 to 25 years for microinverters. Constant summer heat tends to push units toward the shorter end, especially when they hang in direct afternoon sun.
Why does my inverter shut off on hot afternoons?
Most inverters cut their output when they get too hot, and some will shut down entirely. A brief afternoon dip is normal derating. Daily shutdowns, or a unit that stays off until evening, point to a failing fan, a blocked vent, poor placement or an inverter near the end of its life.
Can a solar inverter be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
Many faults are outside the inverter: a breaker, fuse, loose connection, ground fault or lost Wi-Fi link. Those are repaired. When the inverter itself has failed, it is usually replaced, through a warranty claim if it is still covered.
Will my warranty pay for a new inverter?
If it is within the warranty term, the maker usually supplies the part. Labor is a different story: EnergySage notes Tesla covers inverter labor while Enphase does not. We check the serial number and tell you what the claim covers before any work.
One panel shows zero in my app. Is that an inverter problem?
On a microinverter system, a single panel at zero usually means that panel's microinverter failed or lost its connection. We confirm it on the roof, then replace the unit under that panel.
