Mixed Housing, Mixed Roofs
Sunnyslope has a long history in north Phoenix, and solar panel repair here usually means working on a system someone added to a house built for a different era. The neighborhood includes cabins from the 1930s and 1940s, mid-century homes such as a 1955 house on Cave Creek Road that had the area's first bomb shelter, and a lot of infill since. Roofs, wiring and electrical panels vary house to house.
Wiring checks on older houses
When a solar system's output drops or a ground fault appears, the problem may be on the roof or where the solar ties into the home. We check:
- Connectors and wire runs on the roof, especially where they cross hot surfaces.
- Conduit fittings and seals where wiring enters the attic or wall.
- The disconnect and the solar breaker at the main panel.
- Grounding of rails and panel frames.
A corroded or loose connection can heat up long before it fails outright, which is why we test under load and not just with a visual look.
Low-slope and flat roofs
Some older Sunnyslope homes have low-slope or flat roof sections. Panels there may sit on tilted racks or ballasted mounts. Water can pond around mounts on a flat roof, and roof coatings need renewal on a schedule. When a coating or reroof job needs the array moved, we remove it, store it, and reinstall on properly flashed or ballasted mounts after the roofer finishes.
Hillside sun and dust
Sunnyslope Mountain, with the S painted by Sunnyslope High School students in December 1954, is on the Phoenix Historic Property Register. Homes near the hillside and the Phoenix Mountains Preserve get strong sun and wind-blown dust. Rain is rare in Phoenix, so we schedule cleaning by production rather than by the calendar.
Historic properties
Some Sunnyslope buildings are on the city's historic register. Phoenix reviews exterior alterations on designated properties. If your home is listed, check with the Historic Preservation Office before any change that alters how the array looks from the street. Standard repairs that leave the layout unchanged are less likely to be an issue, but the office makes that call.
Call (602) 461-8077 and tell us roughly how old the house is and when the solar went in. That helps us plan the visit.
Sunnyslope Background
- Early cabins. Elizabeth Beatty built low-rent cabins on Ruth Street in the 1930s and 1940s, known as Beatty's Court, and rented them to families with tuberculosis.
- Hillside landmark. Sunnyslope High School students painted the S on Sunnyslope Mountain in December 1954; the mountain is on the Phoenix Historic Property Register.
- Mid-century homes. The Charles and Eleanor Abel House, built in 1955 at 11430 Cave Creek Road, was the first Sunnyslope house with a bomb shelter that doubled as a basement.
- City review. Phoenix provides city review and approval of exterior alterations for designated historic properties.

Sunnyslope Questions
Can solar stay on a flat roof that needs recoating?
Usually not. Most coating and reroof jobs need the array moved. We remove it, then reinstall after the roof work and test the system.
Is a warm smell near my inverter or disconnect a problem?
Treat it as one. Shut the system down using the steps on the inverter label and call us. A loose or corroded connection can overheat.
Does my older electrical panel limit what you can repair?
It can. If the solar breaker or bus connection is worn, that may need an electrical upgrade, which can require a permit. We explain what we find before any work.
