Historic Homes, Modern Equipment

Encanto is Phoenix's smallest urban village by area, about 8 square miles between I-17, McDowell Road and the Grand Canal, and it holds 21 of the city's residential historic districts. That makes solar panel repair in Encanto a little different. The equipment is the same, but the homes are older, the roofs have more history, and visible exterior changes on designated properties go through city review.

Keep the layout, keep it simple

Most repairs do not change how a home looks from the street: replacing a failed microinverter under a panel, fixing a connector, swapping a string inverter mounted out of sight, or cleaning. Where a repair would change what neighbors see, such as moving panels, adding an array section, or changing panel color, we flag it so you can check with the Historic Preservation Office before work begins.

Older roofs under solar

Historic homes may have roofs that have been patched many times, and some have flat or low-slope sections with parapets. When a roof needs work under an existing array, we:

  • Photograph and label the layout so it goes back exactly as it was.
  • Remove panels, rails and mounts, and cap all wiring.
  • Coordinate with your roofer on mount locations and flashing.
  • Reinstall and test every string or microinverter.

Wiring in older houses

Solar wiring has to run from the roof to the inverter and on to the main panel. In older homes that run may pass through tight attics or along exterior walls. Heat in Phoenix attics and on exterior conduit is hard on insulation and fittings. When a ground fault or arc fault shows up, we trace the run end to end, including junction boxes in the attic.

Dense, central location

Encanto is one of the city's densest villages, with Park Central, Phoenix College, the Heard Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum nearby. Street parking and narrow lots can make ladder and equipment placement tight. We plan access before the visit so we are not blocking driveways or alleys longer than needed.

Which utility?

APS lists downtown Phoenix among its main service areas and Encanto sits just north of downtown, but SRP territory overlaps much of the metro, so check your bill. Some repairs, like inverter replacements, need to follow your utility's rules before the system goes back online.

Encanto Questions

Do repairs on a historic home need approval?

Repairs that leave the system looking the same usually do not change anything visible. Phoenix reviews exterior alterations on designated properties, so ask the Historic Preservation Office about anything that changes the layout or appearance.

Can you reinstall panels in the exact same layout after a reroof?

Yes. We photograph and label everything before removal so the array goes back in the same positions with the same wiring.

My older home has a flat roof section. Can solar stay up there?

Often, on tilted or ballasted racks. Flat roofs need good drainage around mounts, and coatings must be maintained, which may require moving the array at times.
